A Gulf hub opens its midfield concourse with a 55-minute promise

Harun International will put the first wave of transfer passengers through a new midfield pier on Thursday, chasing connections the old terminal could not make.

The new midfield pier beside live runways. The promise is not the marble. It is the minute.

Harun International, the Gulf hub built to steal an hour from older transfer airports, opens the first sixteen gates of its midfield concourse on Thursday. The airport’s promise is specific and slightly severe: a minimum connection of fifty-five minutes between the new pier and the existing north stands, including security re-screen where the states require it.

The figure is not a slogan invented for the opening. It is written into the slot-coordination brief sent to airlines last month. Carriers that cannot present a tested connection inside that window keep their old gate, which is a polite way of saying they keep the longer walk. Three network airlines have already moved a bank of night arrivals onto the pier. Two others told the desk they are waiting for the second wave of gates in December.

The building is the easy part. The promise is a connection that survives a late inbound.

“The building is the easy part,” said Rami Darwish, Harun’s operations director. “The promise is a connection that survives a late inbound from the east. If we miss that, we have built a very expensive corridor.”

Baggage is the part passengers will not see and airlines will. The pier’s sortation system was run, empty, for six nights in September. A live test with volunteer bags last week missed the fifty-five-minute case on eleven of two hundred transfers, all of them on the furthest north stands. Darwish said those stands will not be sold as legal connections until the miss rate falls. The opening, in other words, is smaller than the rendering.
